EUROPEAN BLOCK + AMERICANPARK + JAPANESE DENSITY = GRAND-GRAND SCALE We propose for the Northern Osaka Station Area a highly characterised piece of city, a fragment of city able to fullfill the expectations of economical development and revitalize the center of the metropolis, as well as recovering a vitalistic and pleasing vision of the city through natural resources. We propose a group of software lines that generates a new taxonomy of buildings that are not previously determined. Different programs of various natures are arranged according to criteria of compatibility and similarity. The laws of this urban strategy are established in order to facilitate and provoke speculative activity. The buildings will be equipped and configurated to transform the place into a laboratory of the city, where the creation of new programs and its gathering and assemblage is put into practice, defining the new identity of the Umeda area. We propose to build an immense central void, ready to accomodate emerging public programs, surrounded by a built high-density ring where the necessary inner programs are located. In short: the void generates density. The resulting central space is a contemporary public space, a large void with metropolitan scale. Its size, density, programs and figure transform completely the scale of the city centre.
The inner landscape has a completely new character, mixing the exacerbated metropolitanism and the hyperdensification of the built ring and the rural character of its inner surfaces. Natural on the inside and cosmopolitan on the outside. The central void houses programs devoted to investigation and leisure. And at the same time is an experimentation laboratory for metropolitan leisure programs and an experimental centre for animal and vegetal species. An american park, japanese density and fragmentation and the european block generate a transnational identity for the Osaka metropolis.
We propose a combination of programs linked to investigation, learning and culture, together with urban industries, offices for medium-size enterprises and dwellings. It is a contemporanean campus transplanted from the periphery to the very center of the city. The arrangement of programs in the ring is made by reading the contour conditions, trying to understand the necessities that the area lacks and resituating the new ones in order to enhance the regeneration of the surrounding areas. Each program is an independent building, with its adequate typology, depth, equipments and floor height. Only its plan position and height is limited, as well as its built surface. Intense relationships are established between the contained programs: luxury hotels exist side by side with high-tech schools. The high level of characterisation of the 19 pieces coexist with the necessary unity of the built ring: an archipielago of enclaves. The programs are connected by means of an elevated public space. This street is an itinerary that flies over the city, a path in the air from which one has a different perception of the central space and the crown. Its final shape is determined as a radiography of the exacerbated difference between programs.
